SUMMER

Early Summer presents a riot of colour and proud floral varieties. Statuesque Delphiniums reach almost two meters in stature bearing a profusion of ruffled bright blossoms while bold Gladiolus punctuate the uplifting summer mood. Exquisite pink and purple-hued Summer sweet-pea flawlessly accent old-fashioned flouncy Scabiosa tinted lavender, mauve, pink and red evoking a sultry mood to make way for our high summer favourites.

HIGH SUMMER

With the new calendar year, January presents a showcase of dramatic colour and full-bodied flora not for the faint-hearted. Allium, the grapefruit-sized sphere of star-shaped florets poised upon a meter-high stem is both a regal and spirited addition to the summer collection. Flourishes of jewel-tinted Scabiosa add a touch of whimsy as they blouson heartily in the Summer swelter. Snapdragons capture the youthful joy of Summer days with their lip-like flowers conjuring up vibrant kisses of orange, red, pink and yellow. Enchantingly cheerful and ethereally-coloured Delphinium reaches a dramatic final chapter in the seasonal calendar whilst Crème de la Crème, The Rose, takes to the stage. Her voluptuous bloom and striking scent make roses the envy of the floral town having captivated humankind for thousands of years and as the long nights draw to a close, the Dahlia makes its first appearance casting a spell into the Autumn.

AUTUMN

March yields the marvellous triumphs of Summer where the loafing heat by day and crisp dusks remind us a new season is yet to emerge. Dahlia bedazzles in bursts of colour accentuating Mother Nature’s elaborate Fibonacci petals. An end-of-Summer favourite, Lisianthus continues to tease with sensually relaxed ruffles in delicious mid-palette hues of blush, mauve and lavender. Deep-hued extravagantly layered petals distinguish the Carnation bloom in decadent scarlets, magenta plum and amethyst evoking a Wintry flavour as cooler climate flora tantalises our flower palette.

WINTER

Exquisitely tousled carnation petals and their rich hues bloom into early Winter. The ever-playful Anemone in all it’s pirouetting glory dances into bloom rousing it’s late-Winter companions Hyacinth, Snowbell, Freesia and Daffodil. Hyacinth’s pristinely clustered blooms and hypnotising wood-spiced garden scent announce a resuscitation from our cooler climate. Tulip, a fortuitous symbol for many a nation, become the modest floral grand-marshal marching from the depths of Winter in mysterious deep hues permitting a tantalising taste of the next course on the menu, Spring.

PRE-SPRING

Sweet-Pea, our “Queen of the Annuals” serves up a seasonal entrée of freshness. Dulcet by scent and silhouette, Sweet-Pea’s perfumed presence is a captivating honey and orange-blossom scent while pastel-ruffled blooms resemble butterflies aflutter. A lesson in dramatic elegance, Calla Lilly bears an architectural and iconic single petal with an artfully tousled edge accentuating its yellow eye. Now is the time to savour Spring bulbs, Freesia’s intoxicatingly sweet floral notes waft from its unique assemblage of buds reminiscent of a waving flag. Hyacinth, instantly recognisable by abundant reflexed-petal blooms paired with a powerful aroma embellish its tall upright stems. A breathtaking sweet and spicy green scent captures the feeling of Springtime’s arrival.

SPRING

September signals the celebration of a Floral New Year. The year’s efforts are buoyed by the notion of Spring blooms colouring the season with beauty and optimism. Vivid Freesia thrives with gusto while Stock’s clovey-green scented fervent flounces of pastel resemble couture concoctions imaginable at Paris Fashion Week. Spring dawns a revitalised assortment of the Winter’s hard work- Native King Protea measuring 30cm in diameter and Waratahs, the fruits of 7 months labour. Hallmark Spring flowers personify the cottage garden: Ranunculus offer an abundance of dreamy diaphanous blooms in every colour imaginable and feminine frothy Peonies- Sara Bernhardts and British cultivars  - are the Springtime’s bounty. Delphinium’s dainty and distinct blooms begin at the end of Spring beckoning the Summer flowers on.
